Cherished Right

Published 9:52am Monday, August 13, 2012

To the Editor:

In reference to the August 4, 2012 column by Thadd White entitled “My Take on the Chic-Fil-A” I have several questions:

Since an employee of the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald has decided to boycott the Chic-Fil-A restaurant because they exercised their right to Freedom of Speech, should the subscribers of this newspaper now decide to boycott and cancel their subscription?

It would seem that if we truly believed in the Freedom of Speech an individual or business has under the Constitution of the United States, a better response from the public would be to accept the statement as a Cherished Right of our citizens and not start boycotts just because we do not agree with the statement.

My final question is: Where did hate come into this issue? I have followed the Chic-Fil-A statement from the beginning and have seen no evidence of hate except from those who disagree with the Chic-Fil-A statement.

I thank the staff of the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald for allowing me this right of Free Speech and I hope this does not start a boycott or any hate.

YES, there was a lot of hatred displayed on Chick-Fil-A day.

Got your attention, didn’t I? Just so I can stir the pot a little more, I would like to state up-front that “yes….I ate a chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-A on ‘chicken day’. Whew…… I can already feel the hatred coming my way…………………………. With all kidding aside, in my 40+ years of being a Christian, I don’t recall any subject that has been more polarizing or has created more hatred among Christians against each other than this particular subject. As a user on Facebook, I have been referred to as a hateful, weak, insensitive, old fogey (along with other names that I wish not to make public)……..and guess what, it came from other Christians.

What has happened to us Christians that we feel the need to angrily ‘throw stones at each other’? If you believe in Satan, you have to believe that he is laughing his head off at us right now and saying: CHA….CHING……GOAL ACCOMPLISHED! Is this what we want? Is this the attitude that we wish to portray to the sinner?

Some others have also posted negative things in this paper about those that believe in tongues, hell fire, and brimstone. As Satan would again say: CHA….CHING……GOAL ACCOMPLISHED!

In reading my Bible, I believe that there are 3 criteria that should be used to determine whether someone is a Christian: 1) Have you asked Jesus to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins? 2) Have you based the way that you live your life around the Bible? 3) Are you a firm believer and practitioner in Grace? If you can truthfully answer those 3 questions with a “YES”, I consider you a fellow Christian. As silly as this may sound, if you were to think that standing on your head to worship God is the right thing to do, I will support you to do that. We have allowed silly little issues like differences in denominations and “chicken day” to bring division among us believers. Christianity is a growth experience that we all undergo. To condemn anyone because they perform an act or believe something a little differently from us is wrong. As we grow in Christ, we all grow through various stages which make us into a better person. Allow that growth to occur in yourself and others without condemnation.

Quit throwing stones! Stop it……right now! If one chooses to eat chicken and another chooses not too, so be it. Honor and respect each other for doing what they think is right in God’s eyes and condemn no one.

Thank you for your excellent response to Thadd White’s column. The Chick-Fil-A appreciation day was about our precious freedom of speech and the right to hold to your moral, Biblical principles. It had nothing to do with hate. Many liberals love to cry “intolerance” and “hate speech”. Dan Cathy is not denying a group of people the opportunity to eat at or work at Chick-Fil-A. I see intolerance and hate from those who want to deny Mr. Cathy the freedom to speak his mind. We are in the midst of the Third Great Awakening and conservative Christians are RESTORING LOVE!
