Bears top Pasquotank

ELIZABETH CITY – Hertford County pounded out 19 hits as the Bears topped Pasquotank County High School 13-5 here Monday night.

The Bears opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first frame.

Brandon Terry had a two-run double and Tucker Warren added an RBI-single to put the Bears ahead 3-0.

Pasquotank responded with a run in the home half of the first, but HCHS came back with another trio of runs in the second.

Tyler Burden delivered a two-run single and Terry had a sacrifice fly as the Bears built a 6-1 advantage.

The Panthers scored three in the half of the second as well and cut the deficit to 6-4.

Hertford County got a run in the third on a Brock Merritt RBI-single. Bobby Merritt delivered the same in the fourth, giving the Bears an 8-4 edge.

The final five runs from the Bears came in the top of the sixth inning.

Eric Ortiz had a two-run single for HCHS while Terry, Burden and Bobby Merritt each had RBIs to push the lead to 13-4.

Pasquotank added a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Ortiz pitched three innings for the Bears while Warren pitched four frames.

Burden, Warren and Ortiz each had three hits for the Bears. Marvin Harrell, Bobby Merritt, Brock Merritt and Terry each had two hits.

The Bears improved to 13-5 overall and 7-3 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference with the victory.
