AHOSKIE – It was a divine choice.

Sherneice Futrell said God told her that she had made the right choice for a college in which to further her studies as well as her athletic career.

And her choice was Chowan University.

The Hertford County High senior made her selection known Wednesday morning at the school library surrounded by family and friends.

“It was just something God told me to do. I just like it; liked the school and I liked the environment,” she said.

Futrell starred for three years for the Lady Bears and she averaged 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and nearly two assists per game her senior year.

At Chowan, where she will play for veteran coach Pat Mashuda, she also hopes to major in sports management with a minor in coaching.

“I feel like I will make a name for myself at the next level,” she said.

“Coach Mashuda’s system is so much like coach Fred (Bears floor boss Justin Frederes) that I felt comfortable there. I think I’ll fit right in,” she added.

Futrell says she’s looking forward to seeing some former foes from her prep days by signing with a school in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

“I hope I’ll be bringing a lot of talent, a lot of drive and leadership,” she said.  “That’s not to mention energy, potential, and of course – hard work.”

Playing so close to home means also that friends and family members who have helped mentor her career so far can continue to come and see her play.

“I’ve got a great support group that I’m going to be counting on 100 percent,” she said. “They’ve always been there for me no matter what.”

Futrell is the daughter of Bernard Futrell and Ann Peaters-Lassiter.
