AHOSKIE — The Northeast Academy Eagles finally overcame a pesky Terra Ceia Christian School team here at Ridgecroft School Tuesday night.

The number three seeded Eagles put together an 18-2 run midway of the second period to beat back the number six seeded Vikings in first round action of the Tarheel Independent Conference Tournament.

The scoring began with a Will Glover jumper giving the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead.

A basket by the Vikings’ Austin Van Staalduinen tied the score at two.  A three by Ryan Williams and a deuce by Glover gave the Eagles a 7-2 lead with just under six minutes left in the quarter.

A basket by the Vikings’ Aaron Williams and a traditional three-point play by Kyle Hendrix tied the game again at seven apiece. A basket by the Eagles Brad Johnson was followed by another Hendrix hoop keeping the game tied at nine half way through the period.

Johnson then put the Eagles out front to stay at the four- minute mark with a jumper and that was followed by five points from Glover on a basket and free throw and two more free throws putting the Eagles up by a 16-9 margin. A free throw by the Vikings’ Williams cut the Eagles’ lead to 16-10 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter began innocently enough as the Eagles’ Avery Hargrave scored a basket followed by a bucket by the Vikings’ Van Staalduinen.

Then the dam broke as a pair of free throws by the Eagles’ Logan Simonowich started the 18-2 run that put the game out of reach as the Eagles’ led 37-14 following a traditional three-point play from Jake Bryant with just under two minutes remaining in the half.  The half ended with the Eagles holding a 40-18 lead.

The second half saw the Eagles continue to build on their lead. And at the 3:27 mark of the fourth quarter Eagles’ coach Danny Lafferty cleared his bench and the Eagles cruised to a 65-41 victory.

The Eagles were led by Glover’s 20 points followed by Williams’ 12 and Hargrave with10.

Pacing the Vikings were Hendrix with 10 and Austin Van Staalduinen with 8.

The Eagles move on to face the number two seeded Rams of Ridgecroft in semi-final action here on Friday night.
