Rams complete sweep of Northeast

AHOSKIE — Behind the 26-point effort of Michael Byrum, the Ridgecroft Rams boys varsity basketball team completed the sweep of the Northeast Eagles here Tuesday night in Tarheel Independent Conference action.

Jordan Harrell got the Rams started with an early basket which was followed by a three by Northeast’s Logan Simonowich.

Harrell responded with a three of his own giving the Rams a 5-3 lead at the 7:21 mark and the Rams never looked back.  By quarter’s end, the Rams had built nine point lead at 25-16 on the strength of Byrum’s nine points.

The second period saw the Rams outscore the Eagles by a 19-7 margin. The Rams opened the quarter with a 15-2 run with eight of the points coming from Byrum who had two three-pointers and a two-point basket during the run.  The first half ended with the Rams holding a commanding 44-23 lead.

The third quarter began with a three-pointer and free throw by Harrell giving the Rams their largest lead of the night 48-23with 6:56 remaining in the third.

A three by the Eagles’ Ryan Williams followed by a Brad Johnson bucket cut the lead to 48-28 at the six-minute mark.  The Eagles could not get any closer in the period and the Rams took a 59-37 lead into the final stanza.

The final quarter began with the Eagles’ Will Glover converting a pair of free throws followed by a Cos Costello three-pointer.

Glover then hit a field goal, a pair of free throws, and Brad Johnson hit two free throws to cut the Rams lead to 62-45 at the 5:26 mark.  The Eagles continued to claw back but could get no closer than 74-62 with 36 seconds remaining.

The Rams hit six straight free throws to close out the game claiming an 80-62 victory and completing the sweep.

The Rams were led by Byrum’s game-high 26, Harrell chipped in 21 and Julian Becker contributed 16.  The Eagles were led by Johnson’s 19, Williams with 15 and Glover’s 10.

The JV Rams’ boys team ran past the Eagles 32-20.

Leading the charge for the Rams was Austin Brinkley with 10.  The Eagles squad was led by Dale Davis’ eight points.

The Northeast Eagles will travel to Elizabeth City Tuesday to take on the Albemarle Colts while the Rams of Ridgecroft will travel to Hobgood Friday evening to face the Raiders.
