Rams bounce back in tennis

Ridgecroft School got off to a slow start in tennis.

The Lady Rams, however, have rallied to win two straight and pull their overall record to 3-4 for the year.

Ridgecroft downed Oakwood School 7-2 a day after beating Gates County High School by an 8-1 count. Both those wins came after suffering an 8-1 loss to Greenfield School.

Against Oakwood, the Lady Rams took victories in four of the six singles matches.

Katie Futrell got things started with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Martha Williams in the battle of number one seeds. Miller Bryant secured a 7-5, 6-1 win for Ridgecroft at number two as she topped Sage Monroe.

Hennie Larabee also scored a victory for Ridgecroft, winning the number five matchup by dual counts of 6-0 against Sophie Lewis. Amber Bracy then took the final singles victory for the Lady Rams with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caroline Howel.

Oakwood’s Becca Rodriguez scored a victory in the battle of number threes as she defeated Roxie Daniels 6-1 and 6-2. Devone Shusterman also won for Oakwood as she defeated McKenzie Quattlebaum 6-0 and 6-3.

In doubles action, Ridgecroft garnered all three wins. Bryant and Futrell started things off with an 8-3 win over Monroe and Shusterman.

In the battle of number two seeds, Larabee and Chloe Dunn topped Williams and Rodriguez by an 8-5 count. Bracy and Elizabeth Joyner closed the match with an 8-0 win over Howell and Vicky Garrido.

A day earlier, the Rams had handled Gates county by a final of 8-1. In that matchup, Ridgecroft took all three doubles contests and five of the six singles games.

In doubles action, it was Bryant and Futrell who teamed up to take the number one matchup by an 8-2 count as they topped Norah Tyler and Sarah Miller. Larabee and Dunn won the number two matchup, defeating Alyson Owens and Arneshia Eason by a final of 8-3. In the final doubles contest, Bracy and Joyner topped Reshemah Walton and Jackie Wiggins by a final of 9-8.

In singles action, Futrell took an 8-3 win over Owens in the battle of top seeds while Bryant dispatched Tyler 8-2 at the number two spot.

Daniels secured an 8-4 win over Miller in the battle of number three seeds and Larabee defeated Walton 8-1 in the number five matchup. The sixth-seed battle saw Bracy defeat Wiggins 8-2.

Gates County’s only win came at number four singles where Eason topped Quattlebaum by a count of 9-8.

The Sept. 9 matchup saw Ridgecroft take just one win from Greenfield School. That victory came by Bryant at number two singles where she defeated Courtney Williams 3-6, 6-1 and 10-4.

Overall, the Lady Rams improved to 3-4 for the season.
