To the Editor:

In the middle of the night, a citizen who decided that he did not want to obey legal rules came onto my property and stole one of my possessions. In less than an hour, his journey got complicated when he noticed blue lights behind him.

As this citizen was en route back to his home in another county with my possessions, he made the horrible mistake of getting too close to one of Hertford County’s sheriff deputies.

Sergeant Jesse Fennell did not see or hear of anyone doing anything wrong. He acted on his intuition and assumed that something was not right. He proceeded to investigate the situation as this citizen who not only rejected legal rules, but decided also that he had no respect for authority, began to run.

As he fled, Sergeant Fennell realized that his intuition was right. Sergeant Fennell then took my stolen possessions, which were left behind, investigated further and had it returned to me. At this point, Will Liverman took over the investigation and found the suspect.

I now have a newfound respect for the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department. Thank you Sergeant Fennell and Mr. Liverman for not only catching the culprit, but for acting on your intuition and stopping the criminal in his tracks. Thank you for using your training, intuition, and good judgment to serve the citizens in your county.

It’s a good feeling to know that even when I’m asleep, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department is doing their job of protecting and serving the county’s citizens.

Hats off to the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department!!
