RALEIGH – For Paulette Denson, her favorite numbers are 2-5-11-14-25.

That set of five digits exactly matched Tuesday night’s Carolina Cash 5 drawing and earned the Ahoskie woman $63,764.

Denson, an office clerk, said she felt “overwhelmed” when she realized she won the jackpot in Tuesday’s drawing. She told N.C. Education Lottery (NCEL) officials that she purchased a single $1 ticket for the drawing and played her own numbers.

The purchase was made at Lowe’s Foods on Memorial Drive in Ahoskie.

Denson cashed in her winning ticket on Wednesday morning at the NCEL’s regional office in Greenville.

According to NCEL officials, May has been a lucky month for Hertford County. Earlier this month, Brent Futrell of Murfreesboro won $10,000 instantly on a “$200 Million Extravaganza” ticket. He purchased that ticket at Wilco Hess on East Main Street in Murfreesboro.

To date, the largest instant prize winner in Hertford County is Joseph Eason Jr. of Harrellsville. He claimed a $100,000 prize while playing the “Cash Vault” instant game in April of 2008.

Through fiscal year 2010 which ended June 30 of last year, Hertford County players have won more than $8.5 million in prizes and local retailers have earned more than $1.1 million in commissions on ticket sales.

For selling the winning Cash 5 ticket, the estimated commission for the Ahoskie Lowes Food store, pending a check to ensure their lottery sales are in good standing with the NCEL, is $2,000, according to Chris Bushnell, a spokesperson for the state lottery.

Through the same time frame, education programs in Hertford County have received more than $4.3 million in lottery funds. By law, those dollars benefit teacher salaries, school construction, college scholarships and the More at Four program for at-risk four year olds.
