Carl R. Askew

Mr. Carl R. Askew, age 60, of Ahoskie went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 29, 2010 in his home.

Mr. Askew was born on December 24, 1949. He was the loving son of the late George and Jean Hoggard Askew. He was also preceded in death by his beloved brother, George Howard Askew.

Carl was the loving grandson of the late Ester Saunders Hoggard and Carl Hoggard. He was also the grandson of the late Etheline and Joe Askew.

Carl was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Ahoskie. He was Chairman of the Trustee Board, former President of the Senior Usher Board, former advisor of the Junior Choir and former member of the senior choir at the church.

Carl was retired from Hertford County Public Schools after 33 years of dedicated service. He also served on the Ahoskie Town Council and the Public Housing Authority Board.

Carl was also a member of the Hertford County High School Athletic Association.

Carl loved God, his family and Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was known to always help his fellow man. He inspired many young people in the classroom to continue their education and give back to their community.

Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia; his loving daughter, Carla; and his beloved granddaughter, Karmyn Meshall Burden. Other survivors include a dutiful son-in-law Cory Burden; and loving siblings, Marilyn A. Johnson, Cheryl A. Hoggard, Michael Askew, Horace Askew, Joseph Askew, Charles Askew and Darren Askew.

Carl also leaves his aunts, Bernice Holley, Lorraine Melton, Clarese Holley, Mildred Lee, Linda Askew, Catherine Askew and Madelyn Askew. He also leaves his uncles Fred Askew, Eugene Askew, Irvin Askew, William Howard Askew and Vernon Askew to mourn his loss; one God son, T.C. Greene; one God daughter, De’ja Hawkins; many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many loving friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie. There will be a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010 at the church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie.
